Experts advance joint fight against crypto-enabled crime

The 9th Global Conference on Criminal Finances and Cryptoassets brought together global experts to address the professionalization of cryptocurrency-related crime. Participants highlighted the need for stronger international responses to match evolving threats. Key priorities include developing common standards, deepening cooperation, and investing in capacity building.

The criminal use of cryptocurrency is becoming increasingly professionalised, mirroring the sophistication of the global response to these threats. At the 9th Global Conference on Criminal Finances and Cryptoassets, organized by Europol, participants emphasized three essential priorities to enable authorities and industry to keep pace with evolving criminal tactics and recover illicit cryptoassets at scale.

First, developing common standards was identified as crucial for harmonizing approaches across borders. Second, deepening cooperation among law enforcement, regulators, and private sectors is vital to disrupt crypto-enabled crimes effectively. Third, investing in capacity—through training, technology, and resources—will equip stakeholders to handle the growing complexity of these offenses.

This conference underscores the ongoing challenge posed by cryptocurrencies in facilitating crimes such as money laundering and ransomware. By focusing on these priorities, experts aim to enhance global efforts in tracing and seizing digital assets used illicitly, ensuring a more coordinated international framework.
