José Domínguez Muñoz, known as El Cabrero, died this morning in a Seville hospital after a long illness. The artist from Aznalcóllar was 81 and left behind a career defined by rebellion and committed singing.
Born in 1944 in Aznalcóllar, Seville, El Cabrero always kept his work as a goat herder alongside his artistic career. Incorporated in the seventies by Salvador Távora into the La Cuadra company, he developed a nearly fifty-year trajectory that included twenty albums and international reach.
His son El Crespo Zapata announced the death via Facebook. The funeral chapel will be installed at the Teatro Municipal de Aznalcóllar. The artist retired from the stage in 2020 after suffering a stroke.
El Cabrero received awards such as the Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco de Córdoba in 1986 and the Castillete de Oro in 2019. Two documentaries portrayed his life: El Cabrero, el cante de la Sierra from 1988 and Mi patria es la libertad from 2024.
