Former Forza Horizon director defends Game Pass and Sarah Bond

Mike Brown, former creative director on Forza Horizon 5, spoke out in defense of Xbox Game Pass and Sarah Bond during a recent MinnMax podcast appearance.

Brown, who spent nine years at Playground Games before founding Maverick Games in 2022 to develop Clutch, described the Xbox reset under new CEO Asha Sharma as sad and unfortunate. He noted the service had funded many studios and jobs through its subscription model.

He attributed Game Pass struggles to insufficient subscribers after a price increase tied to Call of Duty day-and-date releases. The service later reduced prices and removed the title from its day-one lineup while refocusing on major franchises such as Halo, Fallout, The Elder Scrolls and Minecraft.

Brown rejected criticism of Sarah Bond, calling her sharp and competent. He said she remains an adviser on Sharma's team and emphasized that the Game Pass concept itself was sound despite its commercial shortfall.

Xbox leader Asha Sharma told staff in a memo that the company must make hard choices to build a stronger XBOX. The update follows a recent Game Pass price reduction that has improved subscriber growth.

Microsoft appears to have paused negotiations for new third-party content on Xbox Game Pass. The move comes as the division undergoes leadership changes and cost adjustments.

Shawn Layden, who oversaw PlayStation Studios until 2019, said Microsoft must choose between becoming the world's largest game publisher or a competitive console platform. He argued the two paths cannot converge.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said a healthy console business is necessary but not sufficient for success. She spoke in an interview amid ongoing layoffs at Microsoft Gaming.

Xbox is preparing to shut down Compulsion Games and is in talks to close Double Fine and Ninja Theory as well. Studio leaders are negotiating with Microsoft over the studios' futures. Heavy job losses are expected even if some studios go independent.
