Fumito Ueda explains deeper meaning of Gen Atlas title

Fumito Ueda has detailed the significance behind the name of his upcoming game Gen Atlas during an interview at Summer Game Fest.

The creator of ICO, Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian said the title carries multiple associations. 'So let's start with the 'Gen' part,' Ueda told Eurogamer via translator. 'It's not just one definition or meaning: it has a couple of different word associations. So 'genesis' is one, 'gene' is another, and then 'generate' - the act of generating - is another.' He added that Atlas refers both to a world map and the first cervical vertebra that connects the head to the neck, echoing the robot head design shown in the reveal trailer. Gen Atlas was revealed last Friday in a Summer Game Fest trailer. It is described as a single-player open-world action adventure developed by genDesign and published by Epic Games, with exclusivity on the Epic Games Store for PC and releases also planned for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X. No release date has been announced.
