Gavin Williams throws immaculate inning against Twins

Cleveland Guardians pitcher Gavin Williams threw an immaculate inning in the fourth against the Minnesota Twins on Thursday. He struck out three batters on nine pitches during a 3-1 loss at Progressive Field.

Williams struck out Byron Buxton, Ryan Jeffers and Josh Bell in succession, all swinging, to become the fifth Cleveland pitcher on record to achieve the feat. He allowed just two hits over seven scoreless innings and recorded 11 strikeouts, taking the American League lead with 156.

The right-hander called the outing cool and noted the improvement from his 2025 season, when he led MLB with 83 walks. Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said Williams has grown into a dominant starter when he throws strikes.

Catcher Patrick Bailey said he did not realize the immaculate inning was unfolding until after the ninth pitch. Bailey added the only run for Cleveland with a solo homer in the fifth.

It was the second immaculate inning in MLB this season, following Arizona’s Michael Soroka on March 30. Williams took a no-decision in the series split.
