Huila remains second largest lulo producer in Colombia

The Huila department remains Colombia's second largest lulo supplier after Antioquia, according to the Dane. Municipalities like Garzón and Pitalito stand out in producing this high-quality tropical fruit. Prices have fluctuated throughout 2024 and 2025 due to supply variations.

According to the Dane's price information system, which analyzed lulo behavior from January 2024 to September 2025, Antioquia leads national production, with the municipality of Urrao contributing 65% of the departmental total due to its optimal soil and climate conditions. In second place, Huila makes a significant contribution, where Garzón accounts for 37.2% and Pitalito for 28.2% of departmental supply, noted for the product's high quality. Other key departments include Valle del Cauca, Santander, Boyacá, and Nariño.

Lulo has two main harvest cycles, with fruits maturing four to five months after flowering. “With proper management, the harvest can be maintained continuously throughout the year,” the Dane detailed. This tropical fruit, valued for its acidic and refreshing flavor, is used in beverages, juices, and desserts, and is mainly cultivated in South American countries like Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, as well as Venezuela, Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Mexico.

Regarding destinations, nearly 50% of Antioquia's lulo goes to Medellín, 20.7% to Bucaramanga, and 11.6% to Bogotá. Huila supplies 81.6% to Bogotá and 10.9% to Neiva. Wholesale prices in Bogotá, Neiva, Medellín, and Bucaramanga showed similar patterns, with Bucaramanga recording the highest and Neiva the lowest.

From March 2024, quotations rose until June, with increases of 48% in Medellín due to reduced supply from Jardín, Urrao, Peñol (Antioquia), and Aguadas (Caldas), and over 40% in Neiva from low availability of first-quality lulo from Algeciras (Huila). In 2025, the largest increase occurred in February, particularly in Bogotá due to shortages from Pitalito and Garzón. The most significant decreases were in October 2024 and August 2025.
