Indian Statistical Institute appoints new director after eight months

The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) has appointed renowned mathematician Amartya Kumar Dutta as its full-term director, effective from April 1. The appointment follows an eight-month vacancy in the position. Council Chairman Kopolil Radhakrishnan informed members via email on Tuesday.

Council Chairman Kopolil Radhakrishnan notified council members of the appointment via email on Tuesday. Dutta's predecessor, Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay, completed her term on December 31, 2025. In January, senior-most professor Ayanaendranath Basu was named officiating director.

Dutta is a faculty member in ISI's Statistics and Mathematics Unit. He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Bombay (TIFR), awarded in December 1994 for his thesis "Problems in Algebra: On Affine Fibrations and Linear Planes over a D.V.R."

Dutta has received several awards, including the Professor Satish C. Bhatnagar Award in 2017 for the best publication in the history of mathematics and the INSA Teachers Award from the Indian National Science Academy in 2018.
