Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares has given Hockey Canada the green light to pursue his participation in the upcoming IIHF men's world championship in Switzerland. The 35-year-old forward, speaking to reporters in Toronto, confirmed ongoing discussions with the federation. Tavares last represented Canada at the tournament in 2024.
Tavares, who has appeared in four previous world championships, expressed openness to a fifth stint at the event starting May 15. He noted that conversations with Hockey Canada are underway regarding his availability. This season in the NHL, Tavares recorded 71 points, including 31 goals and 40 assists, for Toronto. Despite strong performances—18 goals and 18 assists over 31 world championship games—he has yet to win a medal at the senior IIHF tournament. Tavares boasts two golds with Canada's senior team from the Sochi Olympics and the World Cup of Hockey, along with junior titles including two world junior championships and one under-18 gold. His Maple Leafs teammate Morgan Rielly has also indicated interest in joining Canada for the tournament. Canada's opener will feature a marquee matchup against Sweden.
