The economic blockade in Manipur over the alleged killing of six Liangmai Naga civilians, which began on June 5, reached its 28th day on July 2. The administration has increased security in Imphal West.
Protests in Manipur continue over an incident on May 13 in which six Liangmai Naga civilians were allegedly abducted and killed. Demonstrators are demanding the arrest of the accused and justice for the victims.
Security was tightened on National Highway-2 on Thursday, July 2. Manipur police and CRPF personnel were deployed in the Namduilong area of Imphal West. Protesters stopped vehicles heading from Imphal to Kangpokpi.
In a separate incident in Imphal East, demonstrators stopped a vehicle carrying telecom equipment and set it on fire. Police reached the spot, brought the situation under control and registered a case. The Kuki-Zo community in Kangpokpi has also been protesting since June 30, demanding that the highway be reopened.
