Mayors from 14 provinces sign federal pact for AMIA justice

More than 50 mayors from 14 provinces gathered on July 1 at the AMIA headquarters in Buenos Aires to sign a joint declaration demanding justice for the 1994 attack and action against antisemitism.

The Federal Encounter for Memory brought together municipal leaders from Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Santa Fe and other provinces at Pasteur Street. Signatories pledged to keep alive the memory of the 85 victims and promote anti-discrimination initiatives in their districts.

Health Minister Mario Lugones represented the national government and stated: “Impunity not only affects the victims and their families. It wounds all of Argentina. It is time to settle that debt.” Buenos Aires Mayor Jorge Macri underlined the cross-party nature of the event.

AMIA President Osvaldo Armoza and Córdoba Mayor Daniel Passerini agreed that the July 18, 1994 attack was a crime against the entire country. A minute of silence and the lighting of 85 candles preceded the signing.

Each mayor received a serigraphy by artist Martín Ron as a symbol of the commitment. Israeli Ambassador Eyal Selá and Argentine Ambassador to Israel Axel Wanisch also attended.
