Microsoft revealed updates to its Windows Update system, giving Windows 11 users greater control over when installations occur. Users can now pause updates for 35 days at a time and extend that pause repeatedly, effectively delaying them as long as needed. Aria Hanson of Microsoft noted in a company blog post that the changes stem from user feedback highlighting 'disruption caused by untimely updates and not enough control over when updates happen.' She emphasized that while updates often include security improvements, users can now choose their timing, though installation remains recommended eventually. Windows 11 owners also gain the option to shut down or restart devices without triggering an update. This builds on a prior adjustment allowing users to skip updates during initial device setup. The new capabilities are currently deploying to members of the Windows Insider program, particularly those in the Dev and Experimental Channels.
