Universal and Illumination's 'Minions & Monsters' led the North American box office on Friday with $16 million from 4,243 theaters. The animated sequel is projected to earn $39.5 million over the Independence Day weekend.
The film has been in theaters since July 1 and is expected to reach a North American total of $64 million by the end of the weekend. Overseas earnings are projected to hit $87 million by Sunday.
Second place went to 'Toy Story 5,' which earned $13 million on Friday in its third weekend. The Pixar sequel is on track for $32 million through Sunday.
'Young Washington' from Angel Studios placed third with $7.4 million on Friday and is expected to gross $16 million by Sunday. Warner Bros. and DC's 'Supergirl' took fourth with $3.6 million, while Steven Spielberg's 'Disclosure Day' earned $2.2 million for fifth place.
