Pikitup launches weekend recovery plan for Joburg waste backlogs

Building on recent waste collection disruptions from protests and operational issues, Johannesburg's Pikitup is deploying teams this weekend to clear backlogs in multiple affected areas and restore normal services.

Pikitup has announced a weekend recovery operation to address waste collection backlogs stemming from protests, work stoppages, and landfill constraints that began earlier this month.

The plan prioritizes regions served by the Randburg, Roodepoort, Central Camp, Midrand, Selby, and Marlborough depots, which have seen significant delays. Teams from these depots will work extended hours to remove accumulated waste and normalize services.

Spokesperson Anthony Selepe confirmed: “The recovery plan will prioritise areas served by the Randburg, Roodepoort, Central Camp, Midrand, Selby and Marlborough depots... Teams at these depots will continue working over the weekend to clear backlogs and restore services."

This follows a week of challenges, including a blockade at Randburg Depot and disputes over strikes and payments, as previously reported.

Two transmission towers collapsed in Nelson Mandela Bay on Thursday, leading to widespread power outages and water disruptions affecting businesses and residents. The municipality is spending R10 million on repairs, with a revised 10-day restoration timeline. Community efforts have supported vulnerable individuals during the crisis.

Residents in parts of Johannesburg have faced waste collection delays since last Friday, with the Democratic Alliance attributing the issue to strikes and payment disputes, while Pikitup cites operational challenges.

Following the first phase of Rand Water's scheduled maintenance at Zuikerbosch, Johannesburg's water supply has seen significant disruptions, with low reservoir levels prompting controlled shutdowns in areas like Sandton, Midrand, and central networks. Officials briefed on recovery on December 17, with water tankers supporting affected residents amid ongoing phases.

Deputy President Paul Mashatile has convened a Water Task Team meeting to address interventions for stabilising Gauteng's water supply following recent disruptions. Officials attribute the issues to electro-mechanical failures and a pipe burst in late January. While Rand Water has restored capacity, municipal systems in Johannesburg face ongoing pressure.

Warnings about the deteriorating infrastructure were issued more than a year ago but went unheeded. The municipality attributes the incident to vandalism and strong winds, while residents demand rebates for the disruption.

The Koedoespoort Substation in Tshwane has failed again, extending power outages in east Pretoria that began last month. Residents in areas like Faerie Glen and Lynnwood remain without electricity as repair teams work to restore supply. City officials report progress on cable repairs but caution that full restoration may take time.
