Pikitup launches weekend recovery plan for Joburg waste backlogs

Building on recent waste collection disruptions from protests and operational issues, Johannesburg's Pikitup is deploying teams this weekend to clear backlogs in multiple affected areas and restore normal services.

Pikitup has announced a weekend recovery operation to address waste collection backlogs stemming from protests, work stoppages, and landfill constraints that began earlier this month.

The plan prioritizes regions served by the Randburg, Roodepoort, Central Camp, Midrand, Selby, and Marlborough depots, which have seen significant delays. Teams from these depots will work extended hours to remove accumulated waste and normalize services.

Spokesperson Anthony Selepe confirmed: “The recovery plan will prioritise areas served by the Randburg, Roodepoort, Central Camp, Midrand, Selby and Marlborough depots... Teams at these depots will continue working over the weekend to clear backlogs and restore services."

This follows a week of challenges, including a blockade at Randburg Depot and disputes over strikes and payments, as previously reported.
