Services resume in Pietermaritzburg after SAMWU strike ends

Residents of Pietermaritzburg can expect gradual restoration of municipal services after the South African Municipal Workers’ Union suspended its two-week strike. The action had halted refuse removal and other essential functions in parts of the city.

The uMsunduzi Municipality confirmed a breakthrough in talks with SAMWU at the Local Labour Forum. The union had called the strike over long-standing salary disparities.

Service delivery across the city was severely disrupted during the industrial action. Essential services including refuse removal and infrastructure maintenance were affected.

Negotiations between the union and city management led to the suspension of the strike. Residents should see a gradual return to normal operations.
