PlayStation backlash targets other game promotions on X

Anger over Sony's plan to drop physical discs for the PlayStation 6 has continued to spread on social media. Posts from the official PlayStation account promoting unrelated games have drawn thousands of negative comments. The backlash shows no sign of easing a week after the initial announcement.

The PlayStation account on X resumed posting on July 7 after several days of silence. Its message about an upcoming arcade fight stick for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls received over 27 million views and 65,000 comments, nearly all critical of the company's decision to abandon physical media in 2028.

Subsequent shares faced similar reactions. A preview for The Blood of Dawnwalker collected 16,000 negative comments. The August 20 release date for Mortal Shell 2 drew 9,500 complaints, while an Apex Legends x Cyberpunk event announcement attracted 8,500.

Users directed their frustration at any content shared by the account. One response stated, “Retweeting Doom will NOT save you Sony, and we are NOT playing Doom or any other game on PlayStation anymore.” A petition urging Sony to reverse course has surpassed 227,000 signatures.

Industry analyst Daniel Ahmad noted that Sony may address the issue but is unlikely to fully reverse its plans.
