Police intercept Nairobi-bound bus with ammunition and GSU uniforms

Police have intercepted a passenger bus heading to Nairobi carrying a cache of live ammunition and General Service Unit (GSU) uniforms along the Thika-Garissa Highway. The discovery occurred during a routine inspection at a multi-agency roadblock in Kanyonyoo. The driver and conductor have been arrested as investigations proceed.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed that a multi-agency security team at the Kanyonyoo roadblock along the Thika-Garissa Highway made the discovery during a routine vehicle inspection. Officers found suspicious items in a blue metallic box in the bus's boot.

The haul included 19 rounds of 7.62x51mm G3 live ammunition, 116 rounds of 7.62x39mm AK-47 live ammunition, two empty AK-47 magazines, and two machetes. Authorities also recovered a complete GSU ceremonial attire set, two GSU combat jackets, three jungle green trousers, and a GSU red beret. The items were booked as a parcel from Mokowe in Lamu County without sender details.

"A multi-agency security team manning a roadblock at Kanyonyoo along the Thika–Garissa Highway has intercepted a passenger bus ferrying a cache of ammunition and government stores, thwarting what could have been a serious security threat," DCI stated.

The bus driver and conductor were arrested at the scene and taken to Kanyonyoo Police Station in Kitui County, where they remain in custody. The DCI is pursuing leads to unmask those behind the consignment and dismantle the criminal network. The incident follows Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja's April 30 order to deploy specialised units along the Nairobi-Garissa Highway amid rising insecurity.

Boda boda operators in Vihiga clashed with police Sunday evening in protest against a motorbike crackdown. The unrest paralysed transport along the Busia-Kisumu highway. Police fired teargas to disperse the protesters.

Rigathi Gachagua, DCP leader, accused the government of reviving a special 12-officer police unit—previously blamed for a January church attack—to disrupt opposition ahead of 2027 polls. He condemned a tear gas assault at his Kikuyu rally and vowed to press on with meetings, while allies criticised police politicisation. Kajiado police denied the claims.
