Sarangani fisherfolk worry over livelihood after coastal uplift

Coastal uplift from the magnitude 7.8 earthquake on June 8 has disrupted livelihoods of fisherfolk and resort owners in Glan, Sarangani.

In Barangay Pangyan, the shoreline receded by 200 meters and the seabed rose by as much as two meters. Genn Abubacar, a 53-year-old fisherman and purok leader, said boats are trapped so they have no income.

Around 100 fishermen in Purok Tamparan are affected. Eric Maso, 49, has switched to driving a motorcycle for hire, earning far less than the P2,000 per fishing trip before.

In Barangay Gumasa, beach resort owner Leicinio Pontilar said they were told not to accept guests for a month due to aftershocks. Officials continue assessing damage to marine habitats.
