Senate approves 90-day extension for armed forces deployment in northern macrozone

The Senate approved a new 90-day extension on Wednesday for the deployment of the Armed Forces in the Northern Macrozone. The measure, backed by 42 votes in favor, extends the military presence in the regions of Arica and Parinacota, Tarapacá and Antofagasta for border security and migration control.

The Chamber of Deputies had previously approved the extension with 141 votes in favor, two against and five abstentions. The measure, which began in February 2023 through Supreme Decree 78, has now been extended 12 times.

Interior Minister Claudio Alvarado highlighted during the session that irregular migrant reconduction tasks reach 73.2 percent effectiveness thanks to the work of the Armed Forces. He also noted a reduction in irregular entries of 37.1 percent in 2025 and 85.1 percent this year.

Several senators spoke during the debate. Francisco Huenchumilla denounced errors in the constitutional text provided for the vote, while Cristián Vial and Vanessa Kaiser supported the extension and called for progress on the rules of force.

Chile's Senate approved by 32 votes in favor, 2 against and 3 abstentions a 30-day extension of the state of exception in La Araucanía Region and Arauco and Biobío provinces. Hours earlier, the Chamber of Deputies passed it with 105 in favor, 23 against and 21 abstentions. The measure, requested by President José Antonio Kast's administration, drew criticism for lacking a comprehensive plan after nearly four years.

A court in Pozo Almonte extended the detention of two Bolivian citizens, aged 31 and 43, arrested in Colchane for trying to fill a ditch from the Escudo Fronterizo plan using a backhoe. Carabineros caught them enabling unauthorized paths for smuggling. The machinery was seized and handed to Customs.

President José Antonio Kast's government has delayed entry of its controversial 'National Reconstruction Plan'—recently renamed the 'economic reactivation reform'—into Congress until next week. Initially announced in March with an expected April 1 entry, the postponement allows final reviews and shifts focus to school security following a deadly incident in Calama.

Ricardo Monreal explained that the constitutional reform approved by Congress will not take effect for the 2027 elections but instead from the 2030 presidential vote. The measure requires secondary legislation that cannot be passed in time.
