Sheinbaum demands explanation from Marina del Pilar over US audios

President Claudia Sheinbaum stated on July 17 that the governor of Baja California must clarify the new audios in which she agrees to a meeting with US authorities in Panama.

Sheinbaum stated during her morning conference that she has not communicated with Marina del Pilar Ávila and that she must provide an explanation on the matter.

The audios reveal the governor's negotiations with FBI agents to recover her visa, revoked in May 2025. In one recording Ávila is heard saying she is willing to cooperate and discuss what she has heard in security meetings.

Senator Ricardo Anaya stated on July 15 that the case must be investigated because it involves handing confidential information to a foreign government in exchange for a personal benefit. In contrast, Secretary Omar García Harfuch ruled out the need for an investigation, considering that no crime is inferred.

Marina del Pilar denied having betrayed the homeland and assured that she has never handed over information that compromises national security. Maru Campos, governor of Chihuahua, accused Ávila of treason to the homeland.
