Snow and sleet expected in northern Mexican sierras on December 4

Cold Front 18 will cause snow or sleet in the sierras of several northern Mexican states on Thursday, December 4. The National Water Commission (Conagua) warns of frosts and isolated rains in some areas. Wind gusts are expected in Baja California and Baja California Sur.

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) of the National Water Commission (Conagua) issued a weather alert for December 4, highlighting the impacts of Cold Front 18. This system will not only bring rains and wind gusts but also snow or sleet in the high areas of northwestern Mexico.

According to the forecast, the sierras of Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, and Sinaloa are the main areas affected by this winter phenomenon, common during the cold season. In Chihuahua and Durango, besides possible snow, isolated rains are expected in specific locations: in Chihuahua, Cuauhtémoc and Hidalgo del Parral; in Durango, Gómez Palacio, El Oro, Santiago Papasquiaro, and Cuencamé.

Wind gusts will focus on Baja California and Baja California Sur, stemming from the same frontal disturbance. Conagua stressed the need for prevention amid these extreme conditions, which can make roads slippery and heighten health risks.

Home recommendations include insulating exposed pipes with foam or thermal tape and maintaining indoor temperatures above 15 degrees Celsius to prevent freezing. For vehicles, check tires, antifreeze levels, battery, and keep the gas tank at least half full. Prepare emergency kits with non-perishables, water, and battery-powered radios, and dress in layers with warm clothing if venturing out.

These steps aim to reduce effects on vulnerable communities, noting that intense cold can disrupt infrastructure and travel.
