Starting Monday, March 2, SVT will end its Rapport broadcasts at 12 and 16 to redirect resources toward new digital formats. The focus will be on enhancing the main 19:30 broadcast and launching Snabbkollen, a program resembling short updates on social media.
SVT, Sweden's public broadcaster, is reducing its traditional news broadcasts to adapt to evolving viewer habits. According to Dagens Media, the Rapport programs at 12 and 16 will cease starting March 2. The remaining slots will be the main 19:30 edition, along with those at 18 and 22.
Program director Karin Ekman explains the shift: “We must remove things if we are to appear in new ways, in new formats.” She notes that the early broadcasts attract a comparatively small audience, allowing resources to be shifted to the Play platform.
A key initiative is Snabbkollen, a format featuring short updates and summaries in a “newsfluencer” style. “We notice that our audience wants more ‘human senders’, as it's easier to absorb,” Ekman states. The program will be updated continuously and available for quick insights into current events.
Ekman compares it to social media “shorts”: “Yes, one could say that. Snabbkollen will be updated continuously and always available for those who quickly want to form an opinion on what's most important right now.” The goal is to address demands for flexible, personal news in digital channels.
