At Ullevi in Gothenburg, Sweden lost 0–1 to Kosovo in the 2026 World Cup qualifier on October 13. The goal was scored by Fisnik Asllani in the first half, and Sweden created chances but failed to score for the third straight match. The team now has one point from four games and sits last in the group, six points behind Kosovo in second place, which qualifies for playoffs.
Coach Jon Dahl Tomasson was downcast afterward. "Today's result is awful, it kills us", he told Viaplay. He admitted the team has forgotten how to score but claimed he has the players' confidence and will not resign. "We are in the middle of a qualifier and I have a contract with the federation", he repeated. Despite a triple substitution at halftime, including Anton Salétros, Anthony Elanga, and Roony Bardghji, Sweden could not turn it around.
Players shared the frustration. Alexander Isak called the loss embarrassing and described the situation as a crisis. Viktor Gyökeres said: "It's clearly a fiasco" and "We don't want it as much". Victor Lindelöf returned as captain in the three-back line.
The full crowd at Ullevi booed the team before the final whistle and displayed banners like "JDT Out, danskjävel". Football chief Kim Källström defended Tomasson against personal attacks but stated: "We have full confidence until we don't". Expert Mikael Lustig opined: "If he doesn't get fired now, he never will". A decision is expected in November ahead of matches against Switzerland and Slovenia, when Sweden is likely to reach playoffs via Nations League.
