Ten coaches sacked in Brazilian Championship after ten rounds

Dorival Júnior's dismissal from Corinthians after a 1-0 loss to Internacional in the tenth round brought the total to ten coaches sacked in Brazil's top football league. Fernando Diniz, formerly of Vasco, is close to agreeing terms to take over at the São Paulo club. The tournament now averages one firing per round.

Dorival Júnior departed Corinthians immediately after the 1-0 defeat to Internacional on Sunday (5). During his tenure, the team won the 2025 Copa do Brasil against Vasco, then coached by Diniz, and the Supercopa do Brasil over Flamengo. Overall, he achieved a 48.9% win rate in 66 matches, with 26 wins, 19 draws, and 21 losses. In this year's Brasileirão, performance dropped to 33.3%, with two wins, four draws, and four losses in ten games.

Fernando Diniz, available since leaving Vasco, is finalizing an agreement to become Corinthians' new coach, as reported on Monday (6).

Other sacked coaches include Jorge Sampaoli (Atlético-MG, after three rounds), Fernando Diniz (Vasco, three rounds), Juan Carlos Osório (Remo), Filipe Luís (Flamengo, three matches), Hernán Crespo (vice-leaders at the time, four rounds), Tite (Cruzeiro, six rounds), Juan Pablo Vojvoda (Santos), Martín Anselmi (Botafogo), and Gilmar Dal Pozzo (Chapecoense). Dorival is the fourth Brazilian on the list, alongside five Argentines and one Colombian.

The turnover highlights an unstable start to the national competition.

Albania's elimination, coached by Brazilian Sylvinho, by Poland in the European playoff semi-final on Thursday in Warsaw ends a historic streak. For the first time since 1930, the 2026 World Cup, expanded to 48 teams, may proceed without any Brazilian coaches leading participating squads.

Eintracht Frankfurt has dismissed coach Dino Toppmöller due to the team's defensive woes, just before two pivotal Champions League games. The decision comes after a 3-3 draw with Werder Bremen that extended Frankfurt's winless streak to four matches. Interim coaches will now lead the side in efforts to secure progression in Europe.

Santos secured a 1-1 draw against Internacional at Beira-Rio in the 35th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro on Monday (24/11). In the Choque-Rei classic played on Saturday (24/1) at Arena Barueri, Palmeiras defeated São Paulo 3-1 and took the provisional lead in the Campeonato Paulista with 12 points. The Verdão goals were scored by Maurício, Flaco López, and Khellven, while Bobadilla pulled one back for the Tricolor. The win deepens São Paulo's crisis, as they have four points and sit 14th, outside the relegation zone by tiebreaker criteria.

The 2026 Campeonato Paulista kicks off this weekend with a shortened pre-season, prompting clubs like Corinthians, Palmeiras, São Paulo, and Santos to use cautious strategies to prevent physical strain. The Federação Paulista de Futebol introduced a new format with fewer dates, akin to the Champions League, while prioritizing state derbies. Coaches criticize the limited preparation time, even as club leaders back the CBF's revamped schedule.
