Tesla announced during its Q2 earnings call that its robotaxi program has completed more than 380000 miles of unsupervised operation across six cities in two states.
Vice President of AI Ashok Elluswamy stated that the program has maintained an impeccable safety record. He noted zero notable incidents in that distance, with any reports involving other actors striking stationary vehicles.
Elluswamy emphasized the achievement as validation for Tesla's camera-only approach to autonomy. He contrasted it with methods relying on lidar, radar, and HD maps, saying the results show safe and affordable self-driving is possible with vision alone.
The miles were accumulated in varying conditions across multiple locations. Tesla has not yet expanded the unsupervised service more broadly, maintaining a controlled rollout pace.
