Tyler Callihan aims to play all nine positions for Pirates

Tyler Callihan is working to become the 24th player in MLB history to appear at every position on the field. The Pirates infielder and outfielder has already pitched and served as an emergency catcher while filling in across the diamond this season.

Acquired from the Cincinnati Reds on March 4, Callihan made his Pirates debut on May 28. He has pitched twice in blowout games and caught batting practice, leaving catcher, shortstop and center field as the positions still needed to complete the rare feat.

Callihan uses different gloves depending on the position and practices at spots where he might enter midgame. "It's whatever the team needs," he said. "If I can contribute in any way, that's kind of what I've done my whole life."

Pirates manager Don Kelly, who played all nine positions during his own career, has offered guidance. Providence School coach Mac Mackiewitz described Callihan as versatile and a baseball junkie who embraces challenges. The 24-year-old has helped Pittsburgh amid multiple injuries.

The Pittsburgh Pirates exploded for 17 runs in a 17-7 victory over the NL Central-leading Cincinnati Reds on Saturday at PNC Park. Every player in the starting lineup drove in at least one run, a feat not achieved since September 16, 1975. The win improved Pittsburgh to 2-0 in May after a four-game sweep by St. Louis earlier in the week.

Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Oneil Cruz was placed on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday with fractures in his left hand. The move is retroactive to Monday.
