UNESCO officials visited South Korea last week to review preparations for the upcoming World Heritage Committee meeting in the southeastern port city of Busan, the Korea Heritage Service (KHS) said Monday.
A four-member team conducted the inspection from Monday through Thursday, checking Busan's BEXCO convention center and nearby accommodations. They discussed safety risk factors and reviewed visa issuance, transportation, and other support measures for participants, according to the KHS.
This was the second such review following an initial inspection in January, ahead of the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee, an intergovernmental body that reviews nominations and conservation of World Heritage sites, set for July 19-29 in Busan.
The event marks the first time South Korea will host such a meeting since joining the World Heritage Convention in 1988. Last month, the KHS unveiled the official emblem incorporating the tiled roof of the main hall of Jongmyo Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Seoul inscribed in 1995.
