Forensic reports have confirmed that a woman from Tortosa died in March from injuries caused by her partner, who is in preventive prison. The justice system is investigating the case as gender violence, the second in Catalonia this year. The Department of Equality and Feminisms of the Generalitat has expressed condolences.
A woman from Tortosa (Tarragona), a town of 36,000 inhabitants, died on March 19 at Verge de Cinta Hospital from severe injuries inflicted by her partner. Judicial sources report that forensic findings conclude the death resulted from blows by him. The victim had never previously reported violence from her partner.
The man was arrested on March 5 by Mossos d’Esquadra for assault causing injury, but the judge released him on provisional liberty with a no-approach order. After the woman's death, he was rearrested and the judge ordered preventive detention. A neighbor of the couple reported the initial assault.
The Department of Equality and Feminisms of the Generalitat confirmed on Tuesday this is the second machista crime in Catalonia in 2026, and the 161st since 2012, including 151 women and 10 children or adolescents. “The department expresses its deepest condolences and support to the woman's circle,” the statement reads. In Spain, there are 18 victims so far this year, and 1,361 since 2003.
Last year, 11 women died from gender violence in Catalonia. The Govern calls for collective efforts to eradicate violence, deeming it “a matter of country.” Resources like the 016 hotline for victims are highlighted.
