Gender Prosecutor's Office Oriente secures first femicide suicide conviction

Chile's Fiscalía de Género Oriente secured its first conviction for femicide suicide. The 14th Guarantee Court sentenced the defendant to four years in effective prison. The events took place on March 8 in La Florida.

Chile's Fiscalía de Género Oriente obtained its first conviction for femicide suicide, a crime established in 2022 under Ley Antonia. The 14th Guarantee Court's ruling on Thursday, April 30, sentenced the defendant to four years of effective prison with no possibility of substitute penalties.

The events occurred on March 8 in La Florida commune, amid a history of gender-based violence. The offense punishes those who cause a woman's death through her suicide as a result of prior violent acts against her, as explained by the Prosecutor's Office on social media.

"This ruling constitutes a relevant precedent in the criminal prosecution of gender violence in our country," emphasized the prosecuting entity. Earlier, in 2025, the Atacama Prosecutor's Office had achieved Chile's first national conviction for this crime.

The sentence represents progress in enforcing gender violence laws in Chile.
