Former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador released a letter expressing support for President Claudia Sheinbaum and accusing US officials of political interference.
In the document released on June 2, López Obrador called for the return of “the other Trump” with whom he maintained dialogue without confrontation during his term. He stated that current pressures respond to November electoral goals and not a genuine interest in solving drug trafficking. Opposition lawmakers criticized the letter. Kenia López Rabadán of PAN demanded that López Obrador “let the President govern” and blamed his “hugs not bullets” strategy for the violence. Rubén Moreira of PRI called it “clumsy” and “inopportune.” President Sheinbaum defended the letter on June 4 during her morning conference. She highlighted the call to respect sovereignty and recalled that US Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin acknowledged greater cooperation with her administration.
