Anthony Joshua in stable condition after fatal Nigeria car crash

Anthony Joshua is in stable condition with minor injuries after a car crash on Nigeria's Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on December 29, 2025, that killed two of his close associates. The incident, first reported briefly the same day, has drawn condolences from officials and the boxing community.

The crash occurred around 11 a.m. on Monday when the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua—seated in the back—exceeded the speed limit, lost control during an overtaking maneuver, and collided with a stationary truck, according to Federal Road Safety Corps spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide. Ogun State Police confirmed Joshua sustained minor injuries and is receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital, along with another injured passenger.

The two fatalities were Sina Ghami, Joshua's strength and conditioning coach, and Latif Ayodele, a trainer who had recently trained with Joshua in table tennis. Matchroom Boxing expressed condolences on X: 'Our thoughts and prayers go to the families and friends of Sina and Latz. RIP.' A fundraiser for Ayodele has raised over $180,000. Ogun State authorities noted the victims were male foreign nationals who died at the scene.

Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu called Joshua in hospital, posting on X: 'I spoke with AJ... to personally convey my condolences... AJ assured me he is receiving the best possible care.' Lagos information commissioner Gbenga Omotoso confirmed ambulances responded promptly. Boxer Jake Paul, recently defeated by Joshua, stated: 'Life is much more important than boxing. I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted.'

Images from the scene show Joshua being assisted from the wreckage. While stable, the incident may impact Joshua's planned boxing comeback.
