Ariadna Montiel rejects ‘Travieso’ Arce candidacy for Morena

Morena national president Ariadna Montiel voiced opposition to former boxer Jorge ‘Travieso’ Arce becoming a party candidate in the 2027 elections. She clarified that Arce is not affiliated and that his entry requires approval from the Incorporations Commission.

In a press conference on Monday, May 18, Montiel stated: “My position in the commission, of which I am a part, is that his candidacy should not be accepted”. She explained that any aspirant must pass through the party’s internal filters.

Other members also rejected the idea. Senator Gerardo Fernández Noroña called for closing doors to figures from other parties. Miguel Torruco, undersecretary at the SSPC, argued that accepting Arce would be a mistake because “politics cannot continue to reward fame over preparation”.

Arce unsuccessfully sought a candidacy with the PAN-PRI-PRD coalition in 2024 for a district in Hermosillo. Sergio Mayer defended his possible incorporation into Morena on social media.
