Arthur Fery defeated Grigor Dimitrov in five sets during the Wimbledon fourth round on July 6. The British wild card won 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(10-7) to reach his first quarterfinal at the tournament.
Fery, ranked outside the top 100, became the first player in that position to advance to the Wimbledon quarterfinals since 2014. He will next face Flavio Cobolli.
Dimitrov took a two-set lead after winning the second and third sets but lost momentum in the fourth and fifth. The 35-year-old Bulgarian has now lost in the Round of 16 for the fourth consecutive year at the All England Club.
Fans expressed frustration with Dimitrov's performance, particularly his inability to close out the match after holding double breaks in the fourth set. One spectator described the collapse as pathetic and suggested it might be time for him to retire.
The match lasted nearly four hours and ended in a tiebreak that Fery won 10-7.
