Battery storage stock in Germany rises to 2.5 million units

In the first quarter of 2026, two gigawatt hours of new battery storage capacity went into operation. The stock of stationary accumulators grew to about 28 gigawatt hours across 2.5 million units. The German Solar Industry Association warns against disadvantaging them in power plant auctions.

In the first quarter of 2026, two-thirds more battery storage was built than the previous year. The German Solar Industry Association (BSW-Solar), citing figures from the Bundesnetzagentur, reports that from January to March, about two gigawatt hours of storage capacity went into operation. This increased the total stock of stationary accumulators to around 28 gigawatt hours, spread across 2.5 million units.

More than half of the addition came from large-scale storage exceeding one gigawatt hour – nearly quadruple the previous year. In the home storage segment with 5 to 20 kilowatt hours, additions stagnated at about 0.74 gigawatt hours.

The installed capacity equates to the average daily private electricity consumption of roughly three million households, according to BSW-Solar. It could balance weather-related fluctuations in solar and wind power production.

BSW-Solar managing director Carsten Körnig voices concerns over plans from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs: "Battery storage must not be disadvantaged against gas power plants in upcoming power plant auctions through unsuitable bidding criteria," he says.

Boralex and the Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation (SNGRDC) have commissioned the Hagersville Battery Energy Storage Park, Canada's largest operating facility of its kind. Featuring 334 Tesla Megapack 2XL units, the project provides 300 MW of power and 1,200 MWh of capacity near Lake Erie, supporting Ontario's grid reliability and renewable integration.

The United States installed a record amount of energy storage capacity in 2025, according to a solar industry report. This milestone advances clean energy infrastructure amid policy challenges from the second Trump administration, as utilities adapt grids to surging electricity demand.

EV batteries can now store excess power and feed it back when needed. Munich engineer Moritz Rupp calls it obvious, as the expensive batteries otherwise sit idle for 23 hours a day. The technology allows use for home electricity or selling to the grid.

LG Energy Solution swung to a first-quarter net loss due to weakening global electric vehicle battery demand. The company reported a 944 billion won ($635.8 million) loss, reversing a profit from a year earlier. It plans to expand its energy storage system business for a more balanced portfolio.

The head of Samsung SDI's research center stated on March 11 at the opening of InterBattery 2026 in Seoul that the company plans to overcome electric vehicle industry slowdowns through opportunities in energy storage systems and robotics. Joo Yong-lak emphasized that the battery industry will lead growth in ESS, robots, and urban air mobility sectors. The event, South Korea's largest battery trade show, features nearly 670 firms from 14 countries.

The U.S. electric grid loses about 5% of generated electricity during transmission, highlighting the need for better storage and delivery systems to support clean energy. A recent overview outlines seven key innovations addressing these challenges across generation, storage, transmission, and demand.
