American tennis player Ben Shelton has admitted to frustration with his inconsistent performances this season despite winning three titles. He spoke ahead of the DC Open, where he begins his hard-court campaign on Tuesday.
Shelton secured titles in Dallas, Munich and Stuttgart across different surfaces in 2026. His best Grand Slam result came at the Australian Open with a quarterfinal appearance, while early exits followed at the French Open and Wimbledon.
During a pre-tournament press conference in Washington, Shelton said the inconsistency of his play has been the main source of frustration. He noted his goal of reaching the later stages of tournaments and winning titles, adding that early-round losses in trap matches have been particularly disappointing.
Shelton will open his hard-court season at the DC Open against Martin Damm Jr. on Tuesday. In a recent practice set, Jack Draper defeated him 6-1, though Shelton holds a strong 95-51 record on hard courts and currently ranks No. 8.
