Charley Hull recorded a quadruple bogey nine on the par-five fifth hole during the first round of the ISPS Handa Women’s Scottish Open at Dundonald Links. The English golfer took seven shots from just off the green after her initial putt rolled away.
Hull had been putting for birdie from 15 feet on the 521-yard hole when her ball slid past and continued down the slope off the green. She then chipped four times, with each attempt rolling back to her feet before finally chipping past the hole and making an eight-foot putt to finish.
Playing partner Nelly Korda had faced similar trouble on the same green earlier in the group. Broadcast commentator Richard Kaufman described the sequence as a nightmare on the Golf Channel.
Hull had spoken the previous day about the challenges of links golf, noting the need for patience with bad bounces and funky shots. She completed her round with a six-over 78.
