Charlotte Rampling joins Mark Ruffalo in Vatican thriller Santo Subito

Charlotte Rampling has joined the cast of the Vatican thriller Santo Subito!, directed by Bertrand Bonello, alongside Mark Ruffalo. The film, which explores the canonization process of Pope John Paul II, has begun shooting in Rome. Rampling will portray philosopher Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka, a confidante of the late pontiff.

Bertrand Bonello, known for directing Saint Laurent and The Beast, is helming Santo Subito!, a film set after the death of Pope John Paul II on April 2, 2005. The story centers on Father Joseph Murolo, played by Mark Ruffalo, an American-born priest tasked by the Vatican as the "devil’s advocate" to investigate the pontiff's life for potential sainthood. As Murolo interviews confidantes and witnesses, he navigates a moral labyrinth that challenges his own faith.

Rampling takes on the role of Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka, a Polish-born American philosopher who shared a long intellectual friendship and exchanged intimate letters with Pope John Paul II. The ensemble cast includes Andrzej Chyra as the pope, Cezary Żak as his personal secretary Stanisław Dziwisz, Marisa Borini as Ruffalo's character's mother Sofia Murolo, Adam Bessa as the pope's would-be assassin Ali Agça, and Anton Lesser as Father Mattew, a friend of Murolo.

Filming is scheduled for ten weeks across Italy, including Rome and Matera, and Poland, with locations in Warsaw and Szczawnica. The script, co-written by Thomas Bidegain—who received an Oscar nomination for Emilia Perez—incorporates eight languages. Behind the camera, Josée Deshaies serves as cinematographer, Dimitri Capuani as art director, and Edoardo Russo as costume designer.

Bonello described the project as "by far my most ambitious on every level," adding, "This fusion of geopolitics, mysticism, investigation and a reflection on faith feels more essential today than ever." Ruffalo expressed enthusiasm, stating, "I’m excited to finally be shooting a film on my ancestral lands," and noted that the script by Bonello and Bidegain "really does wrestle with the big questions between faith and dogma."

The production is led by Mandarin & Compagnie in France, in co-production with Indiana Production in Italy, Madants in Poland, and Playtime, in association with PiperFilm. Vuelta is backing the film, with Playtime handling international sales and PiperFilm managing the Italian release.
