Clandestine pet crematorium raided in Monterrey bakery

Authorities in Monterrey shut down a clandestine pet crematorium operating under the guise of a bakery in Colonia Caracol. Complaints about foul odors and heavy smoke prompted a Friday raid, uncovering bone remains and unlicensed equipment. The associated bakery distanced itself from any involvement.

On Friday, the Specialized Environmental Prosecutor's Office, alongside the State Investigation Agency and the Criminalistics Institute, conducted a raid on a property along Avenida Garza Sada, near Morones Prieto, in Monterrey's Colonia Caracol. The site, posing as a local brand bakery, was exposed by burning smells and anonymous reports of foul odors during early mornings or nights, along with thick smoke plumes.

Days earlier, Monterrey's Civil Protection personnel suspended operations after spotting irregularities. The municipality alerted the Prosecutor's Office and Nuevo León's environmental authorities, leading to the search warrant. Upon entry, inspectors verified it functioned as 'Eternal Friend Pet Cremation' without environmental permits or required licenses.

The search revealed a cremation oven, freezer, stainless steel tables, bone grinder, and urns adorned with animal paw prints. Experts collected calcined bone fragments in a metal container, ashes in the garage, soot on terrace ducts, a reddish stain, and containers with substances awaiting forensic analysis. Partially calcined remains were also secured from the oven, along with an internal motorcycle.

The Prosecutor's Office placed the premises under guard, as the Secretariat of Environment and the State Environmental Prosecutor's Office enforced a total temporary suspension. Panadería Lisboa issued a statement clarifying it 'has no relation to the premises where we operated years ago in Colonia Caracol' and that its current operations in downtown Monterrey are fully independent of the matter.
