Convicted murderer dies in custody from accident

A man in his 20s, convicted of murdering an 80-year-old man in Skurup, was found dead in custody in Ystad the night after his trial on January 16. Police have preliminarily determined the cause of death as an accident, with no signs of suicide. The investigation continues without suspicion of crime.

On January 16, Ystad District Court ruled that the man was guilty of the murder of an 80-year-old man in Skurup municipality in September the previous year. He was to remain in custody pending a forensic psychiatric examination before sentencing was determined. He was found dead in the Ystad detention facility the following night.

Police initially opened a murder investigation related to his death, as no obvious cause could be established. The body underwent a forensic examination, and after additional samples, a preliminary determination has been made. “It was an accident. That's where we've landed,” says Malin Rosén, head of the police department for serious crimes in Ystad, to Ystads Allehanda.

The murder investigation has been closed, and police are continuing without suspicion of crime. “We are continuing our investigation of the death, but without suspicions of crime,” Rosén adds. The final autopsy report may take months. There is nothing to indicate that the man took his own life, and Rosén does not comment on the details of the accident.

The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is conducting a separate internal investigation into the incident, expected to be completed within a month.
