Democratic Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware was treated for minor injuries and released after a multi-vehicle crash in Lewes on Sunday, according to his office and local emergency responders.
The crash happened at the intersection of Savannah Road and Massachusetts Avenue in Lewes, a coastal Delaware city, according to the Lewes Fire Department.
In a statement posted Sunday, Coons said he was a passenger in one of the vehicles struck after another driver suffered a medical incident. Coons said he was taken to Beebe Hospital, treated for minor injuries, and later returned home, adding that he expected to make a full recovery.
Coons thanked emergency personnel from the Lewes Police Department, the Lewes and Rehoboth Fire Departments, Sussex County Emergency Medical Services, and staff at Beebe Hospital. In his statement, he said that, by all accounts, no one was seriously injured.
Coons was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010. He serves as the ranking member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, according to the U.S. Senate’s committee assignments and the Appropriations Committee.
