Following its debut at Disneyland Paris, Walt Disney Imagineering will deploy advanced walking Olaf animatronics from Frozen to Disney World, Disneyland, and parks worldwide, including Cruise Line ships. Senior VP Kyle Laughlin announced the rollout for interactive photo ops, powered by AI reinforcement learning.
The walking Olaf animatronic, which debuted in Disneyland Paris' World of Frozen boat show 'A Celebration in Arendelle' last month, waddles, turns its head, makes eye contact, and delivers pre-recorded lines by Josh Gad. It uses AI reinforcement learning for movement and is remotely controlled with a puppet backup. Fast Company reported Imagineering's plans based on statements from Senior Vice President for Research and Development Kyle Laughlin. Laughlin confirmed expansions to Disneyland, Disney World, and other global Disney theme parks, stating, “He’s one of our most popular characters, so domestically you’ll also see him as well.” He emphasized, “That’s really kind of the important point: We really are building these now for operations and to ensure that they’re everywhere.” Hong Kong Disneyland will add one soon to its World of Frozen. Future plans include similar robots like Sven from Frozen or Lion King characters (Simba, Mufasa, Scar), aiming for 'huggable moments.' Meanwhile, WALL-E and Eve robots debut at Disneyland’s Pixar Place Hotel this April.
