Ethiopia signs 3 billion Birr agreement for power grid modernization

The Ethiopian Electric Utility has signed a 3 billion Birr contract with two international firms to upgrade power networks in Ambo, Nekemte and Asosa.

The Ethiopian Electric Utility signed the agreement with Alpha TND and Capital Electech. The project targets 325 kilometers of medium-voltage lines and the rehabilitation of 235 grid transformers across the three hubs.

Getu Geremew, CEO of the utility, said the work is vital for stabilizing grids and cutting outages. He urged the contractors to meet quality standards within the two-year timeline.

The World Bank is providing blended funding of 1.2 billion Birr in local currency and 12 million US dollars in foreign exchange. Alpha TND is based in Ghana and Capital Electech in India.
