Building on the ongoing FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour by Coca-Cola—which visited New Delhi earlier this month—Guwahati hosts the trophy's first appearance in Assam and the Northeast after a 12-year absence from India.
Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Nandita Gorlosa announced the details at a press conference: "The FIFA World Cup Trophy will make its debut in Assam on January 13 in Guwahati. This has never happened here before. After almost 12 years, the Trophy is returning to India, and for the Northeast, this is a first." She stressed compliance with FIFA's protocols, including security, handling, and a rest period for the trophy, which travels with bodyguards.
The trophy arrives by air around 10 a.m. on January 13 and heads to Barsapara Stadium. Public viewing starts at 3 p.m. with cultural and musical performances on a Coke Studio stage featuring Shankuraj Konwar, Rito Riba, and Anup Jain. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will officially inaugurate it at 8:30 p.m., blending Assamese traditions with broader Indian cultural elements. Entry is free to maximize community engagement.
