Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy, said the inclusion of queer relationships helps make the game's world feel authentic. He spoke in an interview about the approach taken in Rebirth. The comments focus on background characters and their stories.
Hamaguchi described the goal of populating Midgar and other areas with diverse people. He noted that players encounter many towns, cultures, and relationships during the journey.
"In my view, the presence of diverse, authentic relationships within that journey also enhances the world's realism," he said. The team aimed to show sincerity and care when portraying residents.
One example involves two women who begin with a fight and later form a couple. Hamaguchi stressed the addition was not done merely to include such elements.
