A fire in the catenary of Barcelona metro Line 1 forced the evacuation of Glòries and El Clot stations on Monday. Around 120 people received treatment for mild smoke inhalation, with 39 taken to hospitals.
The fire broke out around six in the evening and disrupted service between Glòries and El Clot stations. Line 1 trains stopped running between Sagrera and Catalunya, and El Clot station, which also serves Line 2, was closed.
Passengers said smoke filled the carriage and they used their phones to walk about 200 meters through the tunnel to the platform. One user stated: “I was in the metro carriage when the train stopped suddenly in the tunnel. It smelled of smoke, and we saw it starting to enter the carriage”.
Emergency services sent 19 ambulances and activated the FerroCat plan. None of the people treated were in serious condition.
