The French government is calling for improved European coordination to combat the Asian hornet and electric ant. It will present its proposals on Thursday in Luxembourg.
The Ministry of Ecological Transition said on Wednesday that France wants more coordinated operational exchanges at the European level. Texts already exist, but Paris recommends selecting a few test species for coordinated eradication.
The government distinguishes between species already widely established, such as the Asian hornet first detected in France in 2004, and those that arrived more recently, like the electric ant spotted since 2022. For the former, it advocates a culture of adaptation to minimize impacts.
According to the authorities, citizens expect concrete responses to the lasting presence of these insects. France also suggests ranking species by their environmental impacts to focus resources on the most threatening ones.
