Google expands Genie 3 access to AI Ultra subscribers

Google has announced that its experimental AI prototype, Genie 3, is now available to subscribers of its highest-tier AI plan. The tool allows users to generate and navigate interactive 3D worlds using simple text prompts. Previously limited to trusted testers, this expansion marks a step toward broader access for the 18-and-older audience.

Google revealed on Thursday an expansion of access to Genie 3, its research prototype for creating dynamic, video game-like 3D environments. First showcased in August, Genie 3 had been restricted to the company's Trusted Testers program until now. The tool is now open to AI Ultra subscribers, the top tier of Google's AI subscription service, with eligibility limited to individuals aged 18 and older.

Described as a general-purpose world model, Genie 3 enables real-time generation and navigation of worlds based on text prompts. Powered by Google's advanced AI technologies including Gemini, Nano Banana Pro, and Veo 3, it simulates interactive experiences akin to on-the-fly video game creation. The announcement prompted a dip in several video game company stocks, reflecting market concerns over AI's potential disruption in gaming.

Genie 3 operates through three main functions. World sketching lets users build environments and characters using text prompts or uploaded images, with options for navigation styles like walking or flying, and views such as first-person or third-person. In world exploration, the system generates paths ahead in real time as users interact, allowing camera adjustments for immersion. World remixing permits modifications to existing creations, with a curated gallery of sample worlds available and the option to download exploration videos.

As an early experimental release, Genie 3 has limitations. Generated worlds may not fully match prompts or appear entirely realistic, character controls can vary in responsiveness with some latency, and sessions are capped at 60 seconds. Google plans to extend availability to more territories soon, though for now, it remains exclusive to AI Ultra subscribers and testers.
