Government expert testifies on Matara's DNA in Starlet Wahu murder room

A government laboratory expert, Emilly Okworo, testified in High Court that blood samples on a knife and towel from the room where Starlet Wahu was killed matched her DNA. She also identified semen from suspect John Matara on a condom found there. Matara faces murder charges and is detained at Kamiti Prison.

On Tuesday, February 10, 2026, Emilly Okworo, a government laboratory expert, testified in High Court about her analysis of samples collected by police from the Air BnB room where Starlet Wahu was murdered. She explained using DNA profiling to compare blood from Starlet's body with that found on a knife and towel. “When I compared the DNA from Starlet's blood with that on the items—the knife and towel—they matched, and I concluded it was human blood. That blood belonged to Starlet,” Okworo stated, led by lead prosecutor Dela Wilbey.

Okworo detailed conducting advanced testing and reporting to Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Ingonga, expressing 100% confidence in her findings. She identified semen from suspect John Matara on a condom discovered in the room. Starlet Wahu was the younger sister of Pastor Victor Kanyari.

Defense lawyers Samuel Ayorsa and James Mochere noted another unidentified blood sample and claimed Matara was injured during the incident, with his blood on a towel. The court was shown the knife used to stab Starlet. Matara is charged with her brutal murder and was denied bail, remaining in custody at Kamiti Maximum Prison. She mentioned blood from three people, one unidentified.
