Holger Rune will make his comeback at the Bitpanda Hamburg Open from May 17-23, following a seven-month absence due to a ruptured left Achilles tendon. The 22-year-old Dane suffered the injury during the 2025 Stockholm Open semifinals and underwent surgery. Tournament officials welcomed his decision to restart his season on clay.
Rune ruptured his left Achilles tendon in October 2025 during a semifinal match against Ugo Humbert at the Stockholm Open. He was leading 6-4, 2-2 when he pulled up after hitting a forehand, signaling to his team that something had 'popped.' An ATP physiotherapist helped him off the court in tears, ending his chance at a second title that year after a strong 36-22 record, highlighted by a Barcelona Open victory over Carlos Alcaraz for his fifth tour title. Rune attributed the injury to fatigue, a concern he said should alarm the sports industry. “I can’t wait to be back on the clay at the Bitpanda Hamburg Open and finally experience the atmosphere on court again after such a long break,” Rune said in a tournament statement. “The hard work starts in Hamburg.” Tournament director Enric Molina Mur expressed delight at Rune's choice. “We are very happy that Holger Rune is making his comeback with us in Hamburg. I know how much work Holger has put into this intensive rehabilitation period, and we feel very honoured that he has chosen the Bitpanda Hamburg Open to return to the tour,” Molina Mur said. He anticipated support from Danish fans at Rothenbaum Stadium. Rune has trained at the Monte Carlo Country Club under fitness coach Marco Panichi, previously with Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner. The Hamburg draw features world No. 3 Alexander Zverev and defending champion Flavio Cobolli. Rune appears on entry lists for the Madrid Open and Rome Masters but has not committed.
