The royal court has confirmed that King Carl XVI Gustaf is traveling to Brazil to participate in the UN climate conference COP30 in Belém. According to a letter from Marshal of the Realm Fredrik Wersäll to the government, the king will be present from November 5 to 7 and will deliver a speech among other things. The trip is largely private but includes this official commitment.
Jenny Alexandersson, a royal expert at Aftonbladet, comments: 'The royal couple loves Brazil.' She adds that the couple visits the country regularly, partly due to the queen's connections there. Last fall break, they traveled with several grandchildren to Itacaré to swim and sunbathe, aiming to strengthen the family's ties to Brazil.
While the king is abroad, he is unable to fulfill his duties as head of state. Pursuant to Chapter 5, Section 4 of the Instrument of Government, Crown Princess Victoria will act as temporary regent from November 2 to 16, 2025, Wersäll writes.
Meanwhile, the government has not appointed a replacement for Climate Minister Romina Pourmokhtari (L), who is missing the meeting due to her pregnancy. The news of the king's participation comes just days before the conference begins, underscoring Sweden's continued commitment to global climate policy despite the minister's absence.
